A Brief Detour, St. Louis Cardinals Style
So two or three weeks ago when Spring Training started, I mentioned & tweeted that it was great that the Cardinals were pretty much set, and the only question was which starting pitcher would go down for the season with injuries. I received much grief from those who said I was being negative and pessimistic.
A week later, we found the answer to my question: Jaime Garcia. (Read the latest here)
I did not ask my original question out of cynicism or negativity, but from experience. Every year as far back as I can remember (which admittedly seems less far every year) the Cardinals lose at least one major player, almost always a pitcher, during Spring Training. Recently Chris Carpenter was a regular in this spot, but we’ve also lost Adam Wainwright, Jason Motte (closer, not starter, I admit) and a host of others through the years. Does this make Garcia the new Carpenter? I sure hope not.
