Apartments, ID Cards & Markets, Oh My
Quick post, running out of juice, sitting in the lobby of our new, permanent place in Viña using the free wifi while we wait to get Internet in our apartment. Much more civilized than huddling around the window waving the computers around trying to find the signal. We moved in last night, are still going through things, cleaning, making a list of what we need, etc. Move in was pretty easy, three trips across the street and back, probably about 1/2 hour, so that was a bonus with our location.
Headed out this morning to try and finish getting our ID cards (cedulas). Had a 2/3 successful trip; unbeknownst to us and not in the instructions, Joel’s application also needs a full set of photocopies of Cecile’s documents, so we’ll have to get those and go back. Cecile & I did get ours done; now we go back in about 3 weeks to get the actual cards. Wait until you see my picture, it’s a beaut.
Love Them Markets
After the ID cards, we went back to the market (feria) to stock up on fruit & veggies. Absolutely love this; the feria is actually in the old riverbed, which is mostly dried up. Today’s haul: avocado (palta, not aguacate as we would have thought), strawberries (frutilla, not freza as we would have thought), raspberries, summer (ha!) squash, tomatoes, cilantro, bananas … That may be all or I might have forgotten something. On the way back, we stopped at a few other places to round things out. Each street seems to specialize (some in food, some not); we stopped at a cheesemonger (queso) and got something that seems very havarti-ish, and a carneceria (meat store) and got some chicken breasts.
For lunch I mashed up three of the avocados with some tomato, lemon & cilantro & put it with some of the cheese on some old mini-pitas, which was the only bread we had around (oops, must visit panaderia this afternoon). It was delicious. We plan on blending the fruit into smoothies and my mouth waters just thinking of it. Right now the kitchen smells strongly of the strawberries, so we may need to use those fast.
Will try and write more and include more pictures later, and we should have internet this week. And things really get started this week, Joel starts school & Cecile starts teaching Monday. What do I start doing? Stay tuned…
