I Get It! I Get It! I Don’t Get It
Or The Ongoing Saga of When Does Joel Get Out of School?
So I was feeling pretty good today: Joel had gotten out of school at 1:30 Wednesday & Thursday (he didn’t attend Friday as we attempted to get his cedula, in case you’re having trouble keeping up) so I headed up to pick him up at 1:20 this afternoon, having accomplished a fair amount in the morning. Along the way passed some little kids from his school already heading home, a good sign as they get out earlier. Got there and there were a couple of the escuela mini-vans waiting to pick kids up, and some parents. Another good sign. Heard the bell and some older kids started appearing, so I figured we’re good to go.
And I waited. And waited. And when the went to lock the side gate the bigger kids use, asked the attendant (Don Pedro) in my broken Spanish when school was done for the day, and was told 5:15 (cinco y cuarto), but he suggested I go inside and ask to make sure. As before, it seems no one is 100% percent sure when school gets out, so I went with 5:15, knowing they had my phone number if they needed to call. When I got back to the apartment and looked over the extracurricular materials I noticed that the one for his grade on Monday ends at 5:15, so I though “great, they’re just having them try them out this first week, or something.) And I got back to work.
So of course at 4:00 I get a call from Cecile that they’re done and Joel’s waiting. Apparently they tried her first this time, and she actually had her phone with her in class. So I once again hoofed it up the hill in near-record time (I was battling a head wind today) and picked him up. And once again, Joel knows the schedule. He’s out at 3:30 on Monday and Tuesday, 1:35 Wednesday & Thursday, and we don’t know for sure about Friday, since he wasn’t there last week. So for now we’re going to go with that, but I’ll keep you posted.
