Keeping Viña Clean, or Why I Was Awake at 4:45 This Morning
So I was apparently asleep at 4:45 this morning when I was awakened by what sounded to me like the click click of a skateboard going over sidewalk tiles. Except it kept going, not getting louder or softer. And it kept going. Being now fully awaked I decided to check it out. I looked out the window and saw that it was someone, clearly employed either by the city or privately, going through the aluminum cans they had collected and flattening them by foot, one right after the other, then a break to get two more out, etc. After a certain amount, he would take his broom, sweep them into his shovel and dump them in a large plastic bag he had for the purpose. Obviously I wasn’t counting right from the start, but I estimate he had about 90 cans before he was done with this batch.
Then he took his work gloves off and spent quite a bit of time selling the plastic bag. Then he took a cardboard box (I didn’t see where he got this from) and began tearing off strips from the top. I thought this was his method of breaking it down for recycling, but I was wrong. Once he was down to the sides being about a foot tall, he took the strips and placed them inside the box and then placed the bag of cans in to check the fit. Then he took his shovel and began hacking at whatever else was in the trash can. I’m guessing maybe plastic for recycling also, and the box was to prevent any wetness from getting onto the plastic? But I’m open to other speculation. He then placed the box in, checked it, picked it up and turned it 90 degrees and put the plastic bag of cans in the box, gathered his equipment, and moved on to presumably the next pickup.
One of the local dogs was sleeping nearby when I first looked, later it was sitting up (probably looking disgruntled, but I was a little far away to tell), and then it followed the worker when he headed down the street. All in all an interesting way to spend the half hour from 4:45 – 5:15 this morning. (I did eventually get a little more sleep.)
