Peoria Restaurant Review: Mi Familia
That thing where you pick the paint store that’s closest to your favorite Mexican restaurant so you can go there for lunch? Yeah, we did that yesterday.
Authentic Mexican Food in an Authentic Mexican Restaurant
When it comes to our favorite Mexican restaurant in Peoria, there’s a split in our family. Joel prefers Los Jimadores (the original up on University), while Cecile and I prefer Mi Familia on Wisconsin across from the Glen Oak school. While one could say that everyone’s entitled to their opinion, in this case Cecile and I are right and Joel is wrong.
After all, we have the years of experience living on the border on our side. And while Joel did spend some time on the border (with us) when he was young (really young), we’re older, wiser and have more relevant experience. So that’s that.
What Makes It So Good?
Well there’s the food, obviously, which is delicious. But there’s also the atmosphere. If you’ve been there, you might think I’m joking, but I’m not. Mi Familia feels like a Mexican restaurant, not a U.S. restaurant serving Americanized Mexican food. When we walk in, we feel like we’re back on the border, we’re not sure which side, and we don’t care.
Really, It’s All Good
Order the guacamole and you get to see them scoop the avocados and mix it all up; the tortas have the right kind of bread (which is essential for a torta), the salsa is a little different every time you come in. Really, everything we’ve ever ordered has been fabulous.
Cecile is partial to the sopas, which are thick corn … patties, for lack of a better word, piled with all sorts of yummy stuff. It usually includes some type of meat, but we generally only eat sustainably raised meat, so she’ll get hers vegetarian with avocado and/or egg.
I like it all. Cheese enchiladas, tortas (yes, you can do it veggie, again with avocado), everything we’ve had there has been fantastic.
It’s probably good it’s not closer, or we’d be eating there all the time, and we’d have to exercise a whole lot more.
So do yourself a favor, head over to Wisconsin Ave. and have breakfast, lunch or dinner at Mi Familia.
