Quick Valparaiso Fire Update
Today was a good day. Dawned foggy and cool, and stayed that way throughout the day. The fires seem to be largely under control although they expect it may be several weeks before all the hotspots are out. But if things stay calm it should be good. The only down side of the fog is they were mostly fighting the fire by helicopter and using small planes as spotters, and I saw none of that today presumably because of visibility. Latest totals are 15 dead, 2500 homes destroyed, a couple of thousand without power, and 11,000 evacuated.
Just checked the weather and it doesn’t look as good for tomorrow, a little windier and warmer. Joel’s school is collecting as is our building, so Cecile just went out a got a bag of things for him to take tomorrow.
And on a slightly lighter note, fire abatement procedures are in place, in other words try and clean up possible kindling. On the route to Joel’s school we pass by some tall walls while going up steep hills. These verges are covered in weeds, and in one of them they did remove it … to the sidewalk. Not sure that’s much safer and it’s been there for at least two days.
